Rep. Skyler Rude discusses parents’ rights, financial education, and other key legislative battles on “The Bottom Line” on KONA Radio
Rep. Skyler Rude, R-Walla Walla, joined The Bottom Line on KONA Radio to discuss key legislative issues impacting the 16th District and people across the state.
Fighting for Parents’ Rights
One of the central topics of discussion was the Parents’ Bill of Rights, a voter-approved initiative that initially passed overwhelmingly in the House but is now facing efforts to be weakened (HB 1296). Rude explained how certain changes—like concealing students’ mental health records from parents and delaying notification of student assaults—are deeply concerning. “I’m not even a parent, but I feel very strongly about parents’ rights,” Rude said. “We put up one of the hardest floor fights we’ve seen in a while to push back against these changes.”
Championing financial education
On a more positive note, Rude’s financial literacy bill (HB 1285) has once again passed the House and is now awaiting action in the Senate. The bill, which aims to better prepare students for real-world financial decisions, has gained support from the state teachers’ union and the State Board of Education. “This year, I made modifications to improve its chances, and I’m hopeful it will pass,” he shared.
Legislative battles on rent control and firearm permits
Rude also weighed in on the impact of proposed rent control measures (HB 1217), arguing that such policies discourage development and lead to housing shortages. “We’ve already had developers say they’re done in Washington and are moving to Idaho,” he warned.
Another concern is the new firearm permitting bill (HB 1163), which would require live-fire training before purchasing a firearm—despite potential constitutional challenges. Rude raised logistical and legal questions about how the law would function, pointing out that criminals are unlikely to follow these added restrictions.
What’s next?
As the session moves forward, budget negotiations and Senate bills will take center stage. Rude remains committed to advocating for policies that protect personal freedoms, strengthen education, and ensure government accountability.
