Rep. Skyler Rude fights to fund critical Hwy 12 safety improvements | Amendment 940 to Senate Bill 5161 (the transportation budget)

In this floor speech, Rep. Skyler Rude, R-Walla Walla, urges support for his amendment to the transportation budget (Senate Bill 5161) that would help secure $108 million in federal funding for the long-awaited Highway 12 project in Southeast Washington.

Highway 12 has been a top priority in the Walla Walla region for decades due to serious safety concerns along its two-lane stretch. Phase eight of the Walla Walla Corridor Improvements project—the final segment—aims to expand the highway to four lanes between Wallula and Nine Mile Hill.

Rude’s amendment would authorize $50 million in state funds now and pledge another $25 million in the next biennium to meet the required match for the federal funds. Without state action, the region risks losing this critical investment.
