Rep. Skyler Rude’s response to Gov. Inslee’s creation of an incentive program encouraging Washingtonians to get vaccinated against COVID-19

On Thursday, Gov. Jay Inslee announced a new incentive program to encourage more Washingtonians to get vaccinated against COVID-19. According to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH), approximately 63% of Washingtonians have initiated a vaccination. The state is set to fully reopen on June 30, or possibly before, if 70% of eligible adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The “Shot of a Lifetime” incentive program will be conducted by the Washington State Lottery in partnership with other state agencies, technology companies, sports teams, and higher education institutions.

Rep. Skyler Rude, R-Walla Walla, released the following statement regarding the governor’s announcement of the “Shot of a Lifetime” giveaway series:

“The governor’s plan to bribe Washingtonians to make specific health care decisions does a disservice to all Washington residents.

“Individuals’ right to make their own health care decisions, free of coercion, is a fundamental element of individual choice.

“Whether a top-down mandate or an incentive program, the government should not be compelling people to make personal health care decisions for prizes.”
